A dining room table is where your family sits down each night for dinner or the place where you hosts friends and family when they visit. It is an important feature of any home.

But there are countless styles to choose from.

When you are selecting dining room tables picking between a square or round table is a major question to answer. Here are some tips to help you make the right decision for you.

Square tables can create a sense of balance and proportion in square rooms. This can create symmetry in your dining room (or the rest of the house) if you are searching for that option. Square tables are not dominating and can be ideal for 4 to 8 seats around the table.

It’s possible that square tables create areas where seats are cramped against the wall or if you need to pull up an extra chair it makes an awkward spot for whoever sits there.

Round tables are typically a better option for smaller dining room spaces. They offer a cozy, comfortable feel around the table and have a smaller footprint. If you have small children a round table can be beneficial since it reduces sharp edges.

The biggest issue with a round table is that they can be tipping hazards since they are usually supported by a single pedestal in the center. Apply pressure to different areas on the table in order to test for this issue.
